At the gallery at the MDC Hialeah Campus, New Tapestries/Nuevo Tapices Works by Raimundo Travieso will open September 21 and run through December 9, 2017. The opening reception is Wednesday, September 21 at noon. The MCC Hialeah Campus is located at 1780 W 49th Street Hialeah, Florida 33012.
Born in Havana in 1946, Travieso is a self-taught artist whose first and abiding love is drawing. The driving force behind his mission as an artist which is seen in all of his work is the pure trace of line, its simple forms and aesthetic, which are the starting point in all of his work, including his latest, the tapestries.
His starting point for creating tapestries was in the tradition of tapestries in the West where they were used to glorify the monarch, ruler or wealthy patron but also served a real purpose in creating a physically and emotionally warm environment in the drafty and unheated castles fortresses and cathedrals of the Middle Ages. In modern times, the function of the tapestry is often no longer relevant but Travieso sees in many of them, the silence and spirituality that inspires his own works.
At the MDC West Campus, Paramo: Works by Ricardo Cardenas will run from September 21 – December 9 at the gallery. The opening reception is September 22 at 11:30 a.m. Cardenas’ art encompasses a combination of the elements of cubism, gestural abstraction, and traces of the figurative that re-enforces his renditions of daily life and the people who populate it.
Cardenas’ works – created from cement covered with mesh – portray great visual force and rich formality of structure that overlap in a synthetic language where autobiographic themes prevail and revolve around the stylizing of figures and symbolic compositions focused on search, experimentation, and inquiries into Aztec art – all of which have been instrumental in inspiring the young artist.
The Povera art movement, which focused on modern art in the 1960s and 1970s, has been influential in the construction of the sculptures Cardenas creates on cement that serves as a platform on which he mounts the heavy pieces onto the wall and employs his civil architectural knowledge. The exhibition, a collaboration between MDC Galleries of Art + Design and Contemporary Art Projects USA, is curated by Silvia Medina in collaboration with Mariavelia Savino and will be on display at the MDC West Campus Gallery at 3800 N.W. 115th Ave. Doral, Florida.
The Gallery at MDC North Campus will present Cu4tro Caminos (Four Paths) October 6 – October 26 with an opening reception October 6 at 10 a.m. Four Cuban-American artists living in Miami — Carlos Luna, Alvaro Labañino, Jefreid Lotti, and Miguel Saludes — celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a painting exhibition. The MDC North Campus Gallery is located at Building 5, Lehman Theater Building, 11380 N.W. 27th Ave. Miami, Florida.
