Gregg Emery
Gregg Emery triggers associations both intended and unexpected, allowing the viewer to continuously enjoy the works with their own, ever-evolving interpretations.
In collaboration with Contemporary Arts Projects , Aston Martin Residences and G&G developers, a commissioned painting was unveiled during the opening of the iconic building designed by Rodolfo Miani of Bodas Miani Anger. His most recent series, including ‘Better’, pictured above and on view during Context Art Fair, are inspired and born out of this original commission for the luxury residences.
For some time, Emery has used the circle as a recurring motif and when approached this partnership, pushed deeper into the idea of time dilation while imagining the direction of this epic work. Emery built on Einstein’s ideas that time is relative while folding in the impression that time is experienced differently under varied conditions, whether speeding along within an Aston Martin car, painting in a meditative manner in the studio or finding solace at home in incredible spaces like those afforded by the residents within this incredible residential structure.
Emery’s marks suggest different rhythms as if completed at disparate times under vastly varied experiences. There are moments of repose and reflection, others of velocity and still others, that take us someplace beyond or even deeper within ourselves. Suggestive of the Japanese Gutai artists who embraced experimentation but tempered with years of work within drawing in public spaces, Emery pulls and manipulates paint in disparate manners. Using gestural movements contrasting with those of slow pulls harkening back to his early work with seriography, he works to distill the seeming chaos into a meditative moment. Emery further paid homage to Rothko and Ufan in the vertical and horizontal ‘pulls’ of paint. The finished work stands apart yet together with the magnificent edifice of the Aston Martin Residences.
His touch is present and the use of the element of water to fold in an unpredictability of nature and our own unique human approach to connection with place and materials. It is a painting meant to be viewed from afar and very close as well. Subtle shifts, visual nuances will reward the many onlookers that will inhabit and pass through the lobby of the building. It was truly an honor and privilege to see my work nestled within this incredible building. It was important for me to connect it with both the sweeping verticality of the structure as well as the speed of the car while paying tribute to the elegance, quality, attention to exquisite detail and touch that all three possess.’
The past couple of years have been particularly strong for Emery as he has received critical acclaim for his exhibits around the globe. From Brussels to Beijing and back again. Since 2017, Emery was commissioned and completed an 8,000 sq ft mural around a pool on Roosevelt Island that was featured in Time Out NY, the Gothamist and was listed by The New York Post as one of the top Instagram places of the summer. He was selected to exhibit in the 10th Annual Governors Island Art Fair, dubbed by the New York Times as the Art Fair of the 99%. From there it was off to Brussels and the Cube Art Fair, where Emery’s paintings could be viewed alongside the work of Chuck Close and other American greats. This past year his paintings were featured during Art New York at Pier 94. Notably, they appeared prominently this spring in Season 2 of the widely acclaimed TV Show, ‘The Last O.G.’ Emery returned to Art Basel Weeks with Contemporary Art Projects USA at Scope, Context-Art Miami.
Notably, Emery has begun work to rebuild an old church in his hometown, with proceeds from this commission aiding in the construction of a new roof to help move the project into its next phase. The church will be the site of a future art studio, artist residency and art school for local children including the nearby Mohawk population indigenous to the area.
