Pepa Martin and Karen Davis Collaboration | Australia
.
Australian artists Pepa Martin and Karen Davis embarked on their creative partnership in 2005, drawing inspiration from the ancient Japanese art of shibori. They create textile artworks that are distinctively their own, characterized by a fluidity that contrasts with the traditional precision of shibori. Their pieces emerge from a spirit of experimentation.
Their heat-set artworks feature sculptural fabrics that possess both form and dimension. The process is luxurious, beginning with a carefully curated color story, followed by the production of extensive lengths of heat-set silk that retains its shape when dried and pleated. The sculpted fabric is dynamic and full of movement, secured by delicate stitches. The layering of sheer fabrics adds depth, making each artwork uniquely captivating.
As prominent figures in the Australian textile movement, Davis and Martin have authored two books—Shibori Recreated in 2011 and Tie Dip Dye in 2014. They have also conducted numerous workshops at their Sydney studio, nurturing the shibori community and ensuring the continued vitality of this beautiful art form.
