Suqun Zhang born and raised in Shanghai, China, began to study Art when he was thirteen. In 1980, he started his formal artistic education at Shanghai Fine Arts Academy, learning and practicing Chinese or Western artistic styles and techniques, to systematically train and perfect his Visual Art career, while developing his skills and talent under the guidance of well-known Chinese artists. At twenty-seven, Suqun Zhang came to Toronto, Canada. In 1990, he studied Art obtaining a BFA degree at the Visual Arts Department, York University, Toronto. In 1997, Suqun Zhang moved to the United States of America residing in diverse cities. He currently lives in Charlotte, NC, and has exhibited with great success his original meaningful Art in galleries in China and the United States. Using figurative and abstract languages in a masterly way, Suqun Zhang creative proposal reaches perfect balance merging both styles on his unique Artworks. Figurative art represents objects, landscapes, natural themes or people derived from the real world. Abstract, non-figurative, non-objective, non-representational language of shapes, forms, color, and lines, is used to create independently of real reference, as from late 19th century, artists employ a new style to encompass changes in technology, science, and philosophy. Abstract art depictions depart from reality, either slight, partial or complete. The Art of Suqun Zhang is an example of the endless possibilities that a talented mind can reach to creatively communicate with viewers. Suqun Zhang stated that as an Artist his main source of inspiration is to develop wildlife paintings with a particular interest in big cats, as these are the animals that fascinated him since childhood. From ancient times, Tigers captivate mankind, as important cultural or media motifs, considered charismatic they are used to present conservation campaigns worldwide. In 2004, tigers were voted the world’s favorite animal in a poll by television channel Animal Planet, involving around 50,000 viewers from 73 countries. In Chinese myth and culture, the tiger is one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, symbol of brave, leadership, power, authority, friendly and competitive, but on the other side, impetuous, irritable, cruel, or terrifying. In Chinese art, the tiger an earth symbol rival of the dragon, the two respectively represents matter and spirit. The Chinese martial art Hung Ga is based on tiger’s movements. It is also interesting to note the connection of Suqun Zhang powerful Art with the Expressionism, a style originated in Germany in the 20th century to present the world from a subjective perspective, distorting it for the emotional effect to evoke moods or ideas. The extraordinary representations by Suqun Zhang of nature with the tigers’ theme, convey the meaning of emotional experience rather than physical reality, depicting the subjective expressive responses that objects and events arouse within a person.
Suqun Zhang 07has said: “Originally from Shanghai, China, and having spent my life in Japan, Canada, and for the last 20 years, in the US, my multicultural background is showcased in my blend of eastern and western artistic perspectives, which together give inspiration to my work. My style is a particular blend between realism and abstract, integrating rich landscapes and jungle life. In my recent work, the use of camouflage is an important element both fundamentally and visually, as it highlights the lively nature of tigers, and how these majestic creatures interact with our world and ourselves… I always aim to create something that is not only appropriated by people with the same cultural background but also appreciated universally, regardless of such cultural diversity.”
In the Contemporary Art Projects USA Booth at Red Dot Miami 2018, Suqun Zhang exhibits two exquisite
mixed media/gouache and ink on rice paper of 57 x 48 inches each, respectively entitled Patrolling and After Meal that for their innovative and mindful style, as well as masterly developed technique and media will be a traffic stopper highlight for the Fair.
